[figure] Yuki Nagato

I finished building Yuki this weekend and finally took pictures tonight. This is the BUBBA sculpt of Yuki with guitar from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Live A Live episode. If you're interested in how to build this kit, you can follow my work in progress here.

I had to set up my light box again as I had stashed it away for company. I even managed to get a few shots of Haruhi and Yuki together. From those photos, I think there is definite improvement in my techniques and it went a lot faster too! And yes, Yuki is sitting on a CD!

Medium: airbrushed acrylics on resin. Scale: 1/7 @ 15.5cm. 17 photos in this set.

Very nice results! I'm interested in starting to paint kits too (I'm googling it now on my lunch break). I used to draw and paint "aquarelle" a lot before, but I've never used an air brush. I'll probably get a pretty cheap one to start with and just mess around with it. I'm leaning towards using water-based colours too (and you've shown that you can get good results with them), because it seems like less of a hassle and you don't need one of those ventilated cabinets to paint.

Good job. And your site is very nice.

Welcome to the hobby mrdeus! Hope you find it as fun as I did. I bought a cheap airbrush to start this hobby too - something I wouldn't be afraid to take apart and learn how it worked. It's just another tool, so don't let it overwhelm you. Practice is the best way to learn it.

You may still want a ventilated booth for water based paints. Even though they're non-toxic, the atomized vapor is not healthy to breathe and a spray booth will help contain the overspray, as well as keeping dust from settling on the wet paint. At the very least, use a respirator when spraying.

There's lots of info out there to get started with kit building - I did the same research about a year ago. Feel free to ask if you get stuck on anything and looking forward to seeing your work!

Thanks for the tips. I bought a cheap airbrush kit the day before yesterday and I've been messing around with it a little to see how it works.

Hi i love the way your Yuki came out!!! I previously ordered this yuki and Haruhi in her school girls uniform the bunny costume looked to hard for me to paint lol. These are my first garage kits. I was wondering if you can tell me what colors I need. How do I start painting them? Am I supposed to a clear coat at any point?When I have to paint other area around or in areas that are already painted, do I cover the already painted areas with masking tape? If you can help me, I would really appreciate it! I am a complete noob but I wanted to do a model for the longest time, and I'm glad I found some from my favorite anime!!!^_^

Hi manny, I'm glad you liked my Yuki! If you're just starting, I would recommend Cody's Coop for a primer on building kits. Your questions are really hard to answer though, as it's largely a matter of preference depending on the paints used and whether you airbrush or not.

For example, if you get good adhesion with your paints, clear coats are entirely optional - many people don't like using them at all. And if you airbrush, you will have to use masks, but they're rarely used for hand brushing. For colors, it's easiest to just bring along a reference picture and buy the closest matches. But, I actually like to mix my own colors, so I only buy the basic colors and ones with special pigments (metallics, pearls, some bright colors). Since most colors don't come pre-mixed, it's really a great skill to have.

As for what I do, I airbrush with hobby/craft acrylics (which have poor adhesion), so I spray thin clear coats on *everything* and paint in layers. Since I have to mask, this helps to prevent paint lifting from masking. I've also found it easier to fix mistakes over a clear coat without touching the paint underneath. It does take more time, but this is what works for me after lots of trial and error, so it's worth it. I think we all work differently though, so don't be afraid to make mistakes and find what works for you. ^^;;
